Clear Lensectomy

Clear Lensectomy is a vision correction procedure for people who may not be good candidates for LASIK or PRK because of their extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness and age. In this surgical procedure, the natural lens of the eye is is removed and replaced with an artificial lens specifically selected to provide the patient with clear focusing ability.

There are two types of intraocular lens (IOL), the monofocal IOL and the multifocal IOL. The monofocal IOL focuses at one distance and the patient can either have one eye set for near and one set for distance, or both eyes can be set for distance and the patient can wear reading glasses. The multifocal IOL allows the eye to focus distance, intermediate and near. With the multifocal lens, a patient may observe halos and glare when driving at night.

A Clear Lensectomy procedure is similar to modern cataract surgery. To being, the surgeon makes a small incision of approximately 1/8 of an inch in the with the white sclera or on the edge of the cornea. The surgeon inserts a delicate instrument to create a smooth, round opening in the outer capsule of the natural lens. Using a ultrasonic suction probe, the surgeon proceeds to gently break up and suction out the gel from the lens capsule. Then, the surgeon inserts a high quality lens implant of appropriate power and positions it securely within the natural lens capsule.

After the procedure, most patients experience only mild discomfort which can include feeling as if your eye has a fine hair in it (which is temporary), or a mild headache that is easily controlled with an oral pain reliever. Vision is slightly blurred for the first few days but becomes clear within a week. The second eye is usually operated on tow weeks later.
